HYDROLOGIC OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
139 PM CST THU JAN 9 2014 /239 PM EST THU JAN 9 2014/

...INCREASING FLOOD POTENTIAL THIS WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK...

A DEVELOPING AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL LIFT NORTHEAST ACROSS THE
CENTRAL PLAINS AND MID MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ON FRIDAY...AND THEN
CONTINUE NORTHEAST THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES REGION FRIDAY NIGHT. AS
THIS SYSTEM APPROACHES...A WARMER AND MORE MOIST ENVIRONMENT WILL
MOVE NORTHWARD AND SPREAD OVER MUCH OF THE REGION. ALTHOUGH
SURFACE TEMPERATURES MAY INITIALLY BE BELOW FREEZING FRIDAY
MORNING...RAIN WILL BE THE PREDOMINANT PRECIPITATION TYPE AS
WARMING CONTINUES INTO THE EVENING. LIGHT TO AT TIMES MODERATE

RAIN WILL OCCUR FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY SATURDAY
MORNING...BEFORE A TRANSITION BACK TO SNOW OCCURS BY MIDDAY
SATURDAY. WITH ALL OF NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA
APPEARING TO BE IN A FAVORED LOCATION FOR HIGHEST RAINFALL AMOUNTS
THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING...EXPECT THREE QUARTERS TO ONE INCH OF
RAINFALL BEFORE THIS RAIN ENDS OR TRANSITIONS BACK TO ALL SNOW.

THE CURRENT SNOWPACK ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA RANGES IN DEPTH BETWEEN 6 AND 14 INCHES. THE WATER
EQUIVALENT OF THE SNOWPACK IS ESTIMATED BETWEEN 1 AND 2 INCHES.
FROST DEPTHS ARE BETWEEN 3 AND 9 INCHES. A COMBINATION OF
SNOWMELT... RAINFALL...AND FROZEN GROUND...MAY RESULT IN RISES ON
AREA STREAMS WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING ALONG SOME RIVERS. IN
ADDITION...MANY RIVERS IN NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND PORTIONS OF
NORTHWEST INDIANA ARE ICE COVERED. INCREASED FLOWS FROM SNOWMELT
AND RAINFALL COULD RESULT IN BREAK UP OF THE EXISTING ICE COVER...
AND AN INCREASED RISK OF ICE JAMS AND ICE JAM FLOODING.

RESIDENTS ALONG AREA STREAMS AND IN LOW LYING FLOOD PRONE AREAS IN
NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA SHOULD CONTINUE TO CLOSELY
MONITOR THIS DEVELOPING WEATHER SYSTEM AND BE ALERT FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF FLOODING THIS WEEKEND AND EXTENDING INTO NEXT WEEK.
